Why does my hairdresser hate supermarket hair products?

One of the most common questions we get in the salon.
“What is the difference between supermarket vs salon quality hair products?”
If you look at the list of ingredients in both products, you may think they are remarkably similar, but it is about the amount of certain ingredients in each one that causes the issues.
Supermarket products have a dramatically higher quantity of Silicones, Parabens and Sulphates in them.
These products cause side effects while colouring
  • Stops hair from lightening.
  • Colour fades quicker
  • Scalp irritation
  • Hair breakage
  • Hair Loss

When you have been using supermarket hair products at home and come into your hairdresser for a colour appointment, unfortunately you are not off to a good start.

The build-up of these ingredients can stop the hair from being lightened and leaves an uneven tone throughout the hair. It will cause a chemical reaction when a professional lightening product is applied, causing it to heat up to extreme levels, burning the hair off and leaving chemical burns if applied to the scalp. It prevents moisture penetrating the hair shaft leaving the hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage.  Additionally, silicones can cause rashes, itching and irritation to the hair follicles. These symptoms can lead to hair loss if not treated accordingly.
 What is the solution?
Start to detox your hair from these chemicals by using your salon quality products. This will take a few weeks depending on how much you wash your hair as the chemicals are non-water soluble.
You may think the salon quality products are more expensive, but because they tend to be more concentrated, it actually makes them more cost effective as you as you don’t need to use as much product every time.
